🔧 Air Filter - Replacement

The engine air filter on your 1500 is a routine maintenance item that keeps dirt out of the intake system. Replacing it helps maintain airflow and can improve drivability if the old filter is dirty or clogged.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool down before working near the air box.
  • Keep tools, screws, and debris out of the intake opening.
  • Do not run the engine with the air box open.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Work light
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is off.
  • Clean around the air box before opening it so dirt does not fall inside.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and locate the air box

  • Use the hood release inside the cab, then secure the hood with the prop rod.
  • Find the black plastic air box near the engine intake tubing.
  • Blow or wipe off loose dirt first.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or your hand to release the air box clips.
  • If your cover uses screws, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove them.
  • Lift the cover straight up carefully.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the old filter out of the air box.
  • Check the air box for leaves, dirt, or bugs.
  • Do not let anything fall into the intake opening.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and the sealing edge is fully seated.
  • A crooked filter can let dirty air leak past.

Step 5: Reinstall the air box cover

  • Set the cover back on the air box carefully.
  • Reinstall and tighten the clips or screws using the same flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • No torque spec is normally required for the air box cover.

Step 6: Final check

  • Close the hood.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual air leaks or whistling.
  • If the check engine light is on, recheck that the air box is fully sealed.

✅ After Repair

  • Make sure the engine idles normally.
  • Verify the air box cover is fully latched.
  • Inspect the old filter to see how dirty it was; this helps you track service intervals.
