🔧 Cherokee - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Cherokee’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and let it cool before working near the intake.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers and tools away from the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • 🛑 Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Shop vacuum with crevice tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.
  • Have the new filter unboxed and ready.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight and find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (it connects to the large intake tube).

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to help lift the metal retaining clips (if they’re tight), then unhook them by hand with nitrile gloves.
  • Don’t pry hard—clips pop loose gently.

Step 3: Open the housing

  • Lift the top half of the air box lid upward by hand (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • If it doesn’t lift enough, use the flat-blade screwdriver to gently free any sticking tabs or edges.

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to note how it sits (the rubber seal should sit flat all the way around).

Step 5: Clean out the air box

  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to vacuum out leaves and dust from the lower air box.
  • Do not push dirt down the intake opening.

Step 6: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber seal is fully seated and not folded or pinched.
  • A crooked filter can cause a poor seal.

Step 7: Close the air box and re-clip it

  • Lower the air box lid back into position by hand.
  • Snap the retaining clips back on using your hands; use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to guide the clip.
  • Confirm the lid sits evenly all the way around.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10-20 seconds.
  • Listen for air hissing or whistling sounds (a sign the air box lid isn’t fully sealed).
  • Recheck that all clips are fully latched and the lid is seated evenly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
