🔧 Highlander - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter helps your Highlander breathe clean air for proper fuel economy, throttle response, and engine protection. This is a simple beginner-friendly job on the 2.7L engine and does not require removing the air intake box.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground and let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt, leaves, and tools out of the open air filter housing. Anything dropped inside can be pulled into the engine.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter cover is open.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🛑 Set the parking brake.
- 🌡️ Turn the engine off and allow the engine bay to cool.
- 💡 Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the engine air filter box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay.
- 📦 The air filter box is the black plastic box connected to the large air intake tube. The filter sits inside it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release lever inside the cabin.
- Use your hand to release the safety latch at the front of the hood.
- Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod if equipped.
- Use a flashlight to find the black engine air filter housing.
Step 2: Inspect the Air Filter Housing
- Use a flashlight to look around the air filter box before opening it.
- Check for loose leaves, sand, or debris around the cover.
- Use a shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove loose debris from the outside area.
- Clean first to keep dirt out.
Step 3: Release the Air Filter Box Clips
- Use your hand to unclip the metal spring clips on the air filter box cover.
- A spring clip is a small metal latch that snaps the plastic cover closed.
- Pull each clip outward gently until it releases from the cover.
- No bolts normally need to be removed for the engine air filter on your Highlander.
Step 4: Lift the Air Filter Cover
- Use both hands to lift the air filter box cover just enough to access the filter.
- Do not pull hard on the attached intake hose.
- If the cover feels tight, gently wiggle it by hand instead of forcing it.
- Small movement is enough.
Step 5: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter
- Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower housing.
- Notice how the old filter is positioned before removing it completely.
- The pleated paper side faces the incoming air path, and the rubber edge seals against the air box.
- Do not shake the dirty filter over the open air box.
Step 6: Clean the Lower Air Box
- Use a shop vacuum with crevice nozzle to remove leaves, dust, or sand from the lower air box.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing edge where the filter sits.
- Do not push dirt toward the intake tube opening.
- Make sure no towel pieces or debris remain inside.
Step 7: Install the New Engine Air Filter
- Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
- Match the shape of the filter to the shape of the housing.
- Make sure the rubber gasket sits flat all the way around.
- The gasket is the soft rubber edge that seals unfiltered air out.
- Flat gasket prevents dust leaks.
Step 8: Close the Air Filter Box
- Use both hands to lower the air filter box cover onto the new filter.
- Check that the cover sits evenly and does not pinch the filter gasket.
- If the cover will not close easily, reopen it and reseat the filter by hand.
- Do not force the cover closed.
Step 9: Reattach the Spring Clips
- Use your hand to snap each metal spring clip back over the air filter box cover.
- Make sure every clip is fully locked.
- Use a flashlight to inspect the seam around the cover.
- The cover should be flush with no gaps.
Step 10: Final Check
- Use a flashlight to confirm no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.
- Start the engine and listen for unusual hissing or whistling near the air box.
- If you hear a whistle, turn the engine off and recheck that the cover and clips are seated correctly.
- No torque specs apply because this repair uses hand-release clips, not bolts.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Let the engine idle for about 30 seconds and make sure it runs smoothly.
- ✅ Take a short drive and confirm normal throttle response.
- ✅ Recheck the air filter box clips after the test drive.
- ✅ Replace the engine air filter about every 30,000 miles, or sooner in dusty areas like Haryana road conditions.
