🔧 Encore - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter helps your A4 breathe clean air for proper power and fuel economy. On your Encore, the filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) in the engine bay and is a quick DIY job.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers and tools away from the radiator fan area; it can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed; dirt can be sucked into the turbo/engine.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 1/4" extension (3")
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Find the black plastic air filter box (air cleaner housing). It’s connected to the large intake tube going toward the turbo.
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before you start.

Step 2: Release the air filter box fasteners

  • Depending on the housing style, loosen the fasteners on the lid:
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to loosen the screws (they usually stay captured in the lid).
  • If your housing uses clips, pop them open with a flat-blade screwdriver (gently so you don’t snap them).
  • If a small bracket blocks access, remove it with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" extension (3").

Step 3: Open the housing and remove the old filter

  • Lift the lid of the air box enough to pull the filter out. You usually don’t need to fully remove the lid.
  • Pull the old filter straight up and out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust in the bottom of the box.
  • Don’t let debris fall into the intake tube.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower half of the air box.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).
  • If the filter has an “UP” or airflow marking, orient it the same way as the old one.

Step 5: Close the housing and secure everything

  • Lower the lid back into place.
  • Tighten the screws with a Torx T20 screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten; it’s plastic).
  • Reinstall any bracket you removed using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" extension (3").
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for typical 10mm air box/bracket bolts (snug if you don’t have a torque wrench).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any whistling/hissing that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Confirm the lid is fully closed and all screws/clips are secured.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
