🔧 Fusion - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Fusion’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain good fuel economy, smooth power, and protects the engine over time.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle while you work.
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
- ⚠️ Do not touch or open any orange high-voltage wiring (hybrid system).

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Make sure the car is fully OFF (no “Ready to Drive” light).
- Open the hood and support it securely.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter box
- Use a flashlight and find the black plastic air box near the front/side of the engine bay with a large intake tube attached.
Step 2: Unclip the air box cover
- Use your hands to release the metal retaining clips around the air box cover.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a flat trim tool to gently pry it open. A trim tool is a flat plastic/nylon pry tool that helps release clips without breaking them.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box cover up just enough to pull the filter out (you usually don’t need to remove the whole box).
- Wear nitrile gloves and remove the old filter straight out.
Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a flashlight and check the bottom of the air box for leaves or heavy dirt.
- Wipe the rim (where the filter seals) with a clean rag you already have available. Good sealing prevents unfiltered air.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Insert the new engine air filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around the edges (no corners folded).
Step 6: Close and latch the air box
- Lower the air box cover back into place.
- Use your hands to snap all the clips back on.
- Do a quick tug-check on the cover to confirm it’s latched evenly.
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling (could mean the air box isn’t sealed).
- Re-check the clips if anything sounds unusual.
