RAV4 - Engine Air Filter Replacement 🔧

This is a perfect first DIY job on your 2018 RAV4 SE. No jack, no special tools, and usually under 10 minutes.

What you’ll be changing 🧩

You’re replacing the engine air filter (the filter in the black box under the hood that cleans the air going into the engine). This is not the cabin air filter inside the car.

Tools & Parts You Need 🧰

  • 🔩 New engine air filter for 2018 RAV4 2.5L (engine air filter, not cabin). Look for OEM Toyota or a good brand like Denso, Mahle, or Wix.
  • 🧽 Clean rag or paper towel (to wipe out dust in the air box).
  • 🧤 Gloves (optional, but nice to have).

No screwdrivers or wrenches are normally needed; the air box uses metal clips.

Safety First ⚠️

  • 🛑 Park on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and put the shifter in P.
  • 🧊 Make sure the engine is off and has cooled for at least 10–15 minutes so you don’t burn yourself.
  • 🔌 You do not need to disconnect the battery for this job.

Step 1 – Open the Hood 🚗

  • 🔎 Inside the cabin, pull the hood release lever (near the driver’s left foot). You’ll hear the hood pop.
  • 🚶 Go to the front of the RAV4, slide your hand under the center front edge of the hood to find the secondary latch, push it, and lift the hood.
  • 📏 Use the hood prop rod (metal stick) to hold the hood open. It usually clips into a small hole on the underside of the hood.

Step 2 – Locate the Engine Air Filter Box 📦

  • 📍 Stand in front of the car, looking at the engine.
  • On your RAV4, the engine air filter box is a black plastic box on the driver’s side of the engine bay, with a big plastic tube (intake duct) going from the box toward the engine.
  • It has two metal clips on the side and sometimes a couple of plastic tabs on the opposite side that act as hinges.

Step 3 – Open the Air Filter Box 🧰

  • 📎 Find the metal clips on the side of the box facing you.
  • With your fingers, pull the clips away from the box to unhook them. They may be a bit stiff but should pop off with hand force.
  • Once the clips are off, gently lift the top half of the air box. It will pivot on the plastic tabs/hinge on the opposite side.
  • Tip: You don’t need to disconnect any hoses or sensors—just lift the lid enough to get the filter out.

Step 4 – Remove the Old Filter 🧼

  • 📤 Note how the old filter is sitting (which side is up and which way the rubber edge faces).
  • Lift the old air filter straight up and out of the box.
  • Look inside the bottom of the box. Use your rag or paper towel to wipe out leaves, dust, or sand. Do not use water or spray cleaners inside the box.
  • Tip: Don’t let dirt fall down the intake opening (the hole leading toward the engine).

Step 5 – Install the New Filter 🆕

  • 📐 Take the new filter and match its shape to the old one. The rubber sealing edge should sit flat against the rim of the air box.
  • Place the new filter into the box, making sure:
    • The filter sits flat all the way around.
    • No part of the rubber edge is folded or sitting on top of dirt.
  • If the filter has an “UP” or “TOP” marking, follow that. If not, match the orientation of the old one.

Step 6 – Close and Latch the Air Box ✅

  • 📥 Lower the top half of the air box back down, making sure the rear tabs are seated in their slots and the lid sits evenly on the new filter.
  • Reattach the metal clips by pushing them back onto the lid until they snap into place.
  • Check all around the edge of the box to be sure there are no gaps. A gap can let unfiltered air into the engine.

Step 7 – Final Checks & Start-Up 🔁

  • 🧯 Remove any tools or rags from the engine bay.
  • Lower the hood, remove the prop rod, and close the hood firmly.
  • Start the engine. It should run smoothly, with no new warning lights.

How Often to Change It ⏱️

  • 🌫️ Toyota typically recommends around 30,000 miles (48,000 km), but in dusty areas (like many parts of India), it’s smart to inspect every 10,000–15,000 km and replace as needed.
