🔧 Accord - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Accord’s engine air filter sits in the air box and traps dust before it reaches the engine. Replacing it helps keep airflow correct, protects the engine, and can improve driveability if the old filter is dirty.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
Assumption: stock air box with an OEM-style panel filter.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool if it was just running; the engine bay can be hot.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; do not work with the engine running.
- ⚠️ Do not disconnect sensors or force plastic clips; they can break when cold.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box near the front/driver side of the engine bay, connected to a large intake tube.
- The air filter sits inside this box.
Step 2: Release the air box clips
- Put on work gloves and safety glasses.
- Unclip the metal retaining clips on the air box lid by hand.
- Tip: Press, then swing the clip off.
Step 3: Open the air box lid
- Lift the air box lid just enough to remove the filter.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe away loose dust around the housing opening.
- Tip: Don’t let debris fall into the lower box.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the old filter straight up and out by hand.
- Use the flashlight to look inside the lower air box for leaves or heavy dirt.
Step 5: Clean the air box sealing surface
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the mating edge (where the filter seals).
- If you see loose debris in the lower box, carefully wipe it out with the towel.
Step 6: Install the new air filter
- Set the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the filter sits fully flat with no corners folded.
- Tip: A crooked filter can leak unfiltered air.
Step 7: Close the air box and secure the clips
- Lower the air box lid into place by hand.
- Snap all the retaining clips back on by hand.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the lid is seated evenly all the way around.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10-20 seconds.
- Listen for whistling or hissing; that can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed.
- Recheck that all clips are fully latched and the lid sits flush.
