🔧 Malibu - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4—

To replace the engine air filter on your Malibu, you’ll open the air filter housing (air box), swap in the new filter, and reseal the housing. A clean air filter helps your engine breathe properly and can prevent dirt from entering the intake.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and let it cool 10-15 minutes (hot parts can burn you).
  • 🛑 Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the open air box or intake tube.
  • 🛑 Do not start the engine with the air box open.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air filter housing (a black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
  • Have a clean shop towel ready so you can wipe out any loose dust in the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Find the black plastic air box on the driver-side/front area of the engine bay, with a large plastic intake tube running from it.
  • Use safety glasses and work gloves before reaching around the engine bay.

Step 2: Open the air box

  • Look for metal clips and/or screws holding the air box lid down.
  • If your air box uses clips: release them using a flathead screwdriver (gently pry) or by hand.
  • If your air box uses a hose clamp at the intake tube: loosen it with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Don’t force plastic—wiggle and recheck fasteners.

Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to fully remove the lid).
  • Pull the old air filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out any loose dust inside the lower air box. Do not push debris down the intake.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully inside the housing edges (no corners folded).

Step 5: Re-seal the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Reinstall/secure the clips by hand (or with a flathead screwdriver if needed).
  • If you loosened a clamp: tighten it using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug, not over-tight—plastic can crack).
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly closed all the way around.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling or hissing (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • If a check engine light appears, recheck that the air box lid and intake tube connections are fully seated and tight.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
