🔧 Tacoma - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter helps your Tacoma breathe properly, improves throttle response, and protects the 2.7L engine from dust and debris. This is one of the easiest maintenance jobs and is a great first DIY repair.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and turn the engine off before opening the hood.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool if it was recently driven, since nearby parts may be hot.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine while the air filter box is open.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Park your Tacoma on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 📋 Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
- 📋 The air filter is inside the black plastic air cleaner box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- 📋 No infotainment menu steps, scan tool procedures, or battery reset are needed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Air Cleaner Box
- Use a flashlight to look at the passenger side of the engine bay.
- Find the rectangular black plastic air cleaner box connected to the large intake tube.
- The intake tube is the wide black hose that carries filtered air into the engine.
Step 2: Release the Air Cleaner Box Clips
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use your fingers to flip open the metal retaining clips on the air cleaner box lid.
- A retaining clip is a spring-style latch that holds the lid closed.
- Tip: Do not bend the clips.
Step 3: Lift the Air Cleaner Box Lid
- Use both hands to gently lift the air cleaner box lid upward.
- Do not force the intake tube or pull hard on nearby wiring.
- Lift the lid just high enough to slide the old filter out.
Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter
- Use your hands to pull the old engine air filter straight out of the lower air cleaner box.
- Notice which side faces up so the new filter goes in the same way.
- Use a shop towel to wipe loose dust from the inside of the lower air cleaner box.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube opening.
Step 5: Install the New Engine Air Filter
- Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air cleaner box.
- Make sure the rubber seal sits flat all the way around the edge.
- The rubber seal keeps unfiltered dirt from bypassing the filter.
- Tip: A flat seal prevents dust leaks.
Step 6: Close the Air Cleaner Box
- Use both hands to lower the air cleaner box lid evenly over the new filter.
- Check that the lid is not pinching the filter seal.
- Use your fingers to snap the metal retaining clips fully closed.
- No torque spec applies because this repair uses hand-operated clips instead of bolts.
Step 7: Final Visual Check
- Use a flashlight to inspect the seam around the air cleaner box.
- Make sure the lid sits flush and the clips are locked.
- Remove your shop towel and any tools from the engine bay.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Tacoma and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
- ✅ Listen for hissing or whistling near the air cleaner box, which can mean the lid is not seated correctly.
- ✅ If the engine runs normally and there are no unusual sounds, the repair is complete.
- ✅ Replace the engine air filter more often if you drive in dusty areas like construction zones or unpaved roads.
