šŸ”§ Soul - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Soul’s engine air filter sits in the air box and cleans the air going into the engine. Replacing it helps keep airflow correct, protects the engine from dirt, and can prevent poor acceleration or reduced fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers, hair, and loose clothing away from belts/fans.
  • āš ļø Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10–15 minutes.
  • Open the hood and set a flashlight where it lights the air box.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing (air box)

  • Look for a black plastic box in the engine bay with a large intake tube attached.
  • Use a flashlight to find the clips or screws around the air box lid.

Step 2: Open the air box

  • If your air box uses metal clips, release them by hand; if a clip is tight, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver.
  • If your air box uses screws, loosen them with a Phillips screwdriver (usually they stay captured in the lid).
  • Don’t force it—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe any loose dust inside the lower air box.
  • Do not drop dirt into the intake opening.

Step 4: Install the new filter correctly

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower air box the same way the old one sat.
  • Make sure the filter’s edges sit flat in the groove all the way around (this is the ā€œsealā€).
  • If it’s pinched, unfiltered air can bypass.

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid carefully, keeping the filter seated.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or tighten screws with a Phillips screwdriver until snug (do not over-tighten).
  • Give the lid a light tug to confirm it’s locked down evenly.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • Take a short drive and confirm normal throttle response.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
