🔧 Soul - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Soul’s engine air filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing). Replacing it keeps dirt out of the engine and helps maintain good airflow for performance and fuel economy.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, tools, and clothing away from belts and the cooling fan.
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Small flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, turn the engine off, and remove the key.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 10–15 minutes if it was just running.
  • 🔦 Have a flashlight ready so you can see the clips/tabs on the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

  • Pull the hood release inside the cabin, then release the safety latch at the hood.
  • Use a small flashlight to locate the air filter box in the engine bay (a black plastic box with clips).

Step 2: Unclip or unscrew the air filter box lid

  • Most Souls use metal retaining clips; flip them open by hand. If yours has screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter. Don’t force the plastic.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to note how it sits (the rubber edge/gasket should seal all the way around).

Step 4: Clean the air box (lightly)

  • Wipe out loose dust/leaves from the bottom of the air box using a clean shop towel.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube (the round duct leading away from the box).

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower half of the air box.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the seal is fully seated all the way around. A crooked filter can leak dirt.

Step 6: Reinstall and secure the air box lid

  • Lower the lid back into place without pinching the filter edge.
  • Snap the clips back on by hand, or tighten screws with a Phillips screwdriver #2 until snug (do not overtighten plastic).

Step 7: Final check

  • Use a flashlight to check that the lid is seated evenly on all sides.
  • Remove any tools/towels from the engine bay.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds. Listen for unusual whistling or hissing (can indicate the air box isn’t sealed).
  • ✅ If you hear a leak, shut the engine off and re-check that the filter is seated and the clips/screws are secure.
  • 📝 Consider writing the date/mileage on the filter frame with a marker for tracking.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
