šŸ”§ Focus - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your Focus’s engine and helps it breathe properly. It’s a quick job: you’ll open the air filter box, swap the filter, and close everything back up.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep tools and fingers clear of belts and fans.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shut the engine off.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes.
  • Have your new air filter ready and keep the packaging clean.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Open the hood and look for the large black plastic box with an intake tube going toward the engine.
  • Use a flashlight if visibility is tight.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Look for metal clips and/or screws around the edge of the air box lid.
  • If your Focus has clips, pop them open using a flathead screwdriver (medium) if needed. Don’t force—clips should snap free.
  • If your Focus has screws, loosen them with a Torx T25 screwdriver.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Check the bottom of the air box for leaves or dirt.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing area

  • Use your flashlight to inspect the sealing edge where the filter sits.
  • Wipe out loose debris by hand with a clean rag (do not let anything fall into the intake opening). Clean sealing surface prevents dust leaks.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Insert the new filter in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully down in the air box (no corners folded).
  • Confirm the rubber edge (gasket) is evenly seated all the way around.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-lock the clips by hand, or tighten screws with a Torx T25 screwdriver until snug (do not over-tighten plastic).
  • Do a quick tug check to confirm the lid is secured evenly.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10-20 seconds.
  • Listen for a loud hissing or whistling sound (can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • Take a short drive and confirm normal throttle response.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
