🔧 A6 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A6’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the turbo and engine. Replacing it restores airflow and helps fuel economy and throttle response, especially if the filter is dirty or you drive in dusty areas.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the air box or intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring; sensors can be fragile.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T25 driver
  • Torx T30 driver
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Flat trim tool
  • 10mm socket
  • Shop towels
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for at least 15-20 minutes.
  • Have a shop towel ready to wipe out loose dust inside the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • The air filter sits inside the air box (a black plastic box) at the front corner of the engine bay.
  • Use a flashlight (phone) if needed to see the cover screws/clips.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

  • Grip the cover at two corners and pull straight up to release the rubber grommets.
  • If your cover uses fasteners, remove them with a Torx T25 driver or 10mm socket.
  • Pull straight up—don’t twist hard.

Step 3: Open the air box

  • Remove the air box cover screws using a Torx T25 driver (some cars use Torx T30 driver).
  • If your air box uses clips instead of screws, gently pry each clip open using a flat trim tool (a non-sharp plastic pry tool that won’t damage trim).
  • Lift the air box lid up slightly; you usually don’t need to fully remove it.
  • Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs) when reinstalling the air box cover screws.

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the filter straight out of the air box by hand.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dust/leaves inside the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not let anything fall into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box, making sure it sits flat in the lower groove.
  • Match the filter shape exactly; the seal (rubber edge) must be fully seated all the way around.
  • If it rocks, it’s not seated.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid carefully so it doesn’t pinch the filter seal.
  • Install and tighten the screws with a Torx T25 driver (or Torx T30 driver if equipped) and a 1/4" ratchet with 6" extension if needed for access.
  • Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the engine cover

  • Line up the cover’s rubber grommets with the mounting posts, then press straight down by hand until it clicks into place.
  • If your cover uses fasteners, reinstall using a Torx T25 driver or 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm no warning lights appear.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$45 (parts only)
