🔧 Camry - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Camry’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool so you don’t burn your hands on hot parts.
- ⚠️ Power the car OFF and keep the key fob at least 10 feet away so the hybrid system can’t wake up unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Do not blow compressed air into the airbox; dirt can get past the filter.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to P.
- Turn the car OFF and open the hood.
- Keep the key fob away from the car while you work.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight and find the black plastic airbox at the front/side of the engine bay, connected to a large intake tube.
- The air filter sits inside this box.
Step 2: Unclip the airbox lid
- Release the metal retaining clips around the airbox by hand.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it open. Don’t force it; clips can bend.
Step 3: Open the airbox and remove the old filter
- Lift the airbox lid up enough to access the filter.
- Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
- Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the airbox for leaves or dirt.
Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing surface
- Wipe the inside edge (where the filter seals) with a clean rag (use your nitrile gloves).
- If you see loose debris, carefully remove it by hand—do not push it into the intake.
Step 5: Install the new filter
- Drop the new filter into the airbox the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure it sits flat and fully down in the tray all the way around. A crooked filter can leak dirt.
Step 6: Close and latch the airbox
- Lower the airbox lid into place, making sure the lid seats evenly.
- Snap all the metal clips closed by hand.
- Do a quick perimeter check with a flashlight to confirm there’s no gap.
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and let it idle for 10–20 seconds. Listen for any loud hissing (that would suggest the airbox isn’t sealed).
- Recheck that every clip is fully latched.
- No warning light reset is normally required for an air filter change.
