🔧 Explorer - Engine Air Filter Replacement

On your Explorer, the engine air filter sits inside the air filter box (air cleaner housing) in the engine bay. Replacing it keeps airflow clean, helps performance, and can improve fuel economy if the old filter is dirty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and let it cool for 10-15 minutes before working near the intake.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers/tools out of the intake tube; dropping debris can cause driveability issues.
  • 🛑 No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Vacuum (shop vac)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧯 Open the hood and make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
  • 🧼 Have a shop towel ready to wipe the air box sealing surface.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the air filter box

  • Open the hood and locate the large black plastic air filter box connected to the intake tube going to the engine.
  • If a hose or wire is clipped to the box lid, unclip it by hand so the lid can lift.

Step 2: Release the air box clips

  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air filter box lid by hand.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it open.
  • Don’t force it; clips can bend.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up just enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole lid).
  • Pull the old filter straight out and note how it sits (the rubber edge seals against the box).

Step 4: Clean the air box (quickly)

  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt in the bottom of the air box.
  • If there’s debris in the bottom, use a vacuum (shop vac) to remove it.
  • Do not push dirt toward the intake tube opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close the air box and re-clip it

  • Lower the lid fully so it seats evenly on the lower half of the box.
  • Re-latch all metal clips by hand.
  • Reattach any hose/wire clips you removed by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔎 Double-check all clips are fully latched and the lid is not pinching the filter.
  • đźš— Start the engine and listen for any loud hissing/whistling (can indicate the lid isn’t sealed).
  • 🧾 If you track maintenance, note the mileage/date for the next replacement interval.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
