🔧 Durango - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be opening the air filter housing (airbox), removing the old filter, and installing a new one. A clean filter helps your Durango breathe properly and can prevent dirt from getting into the engine.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the cooling fan area; it can turn on unexpectedly on some vehicles.
  • đź‘“ Wear safety glasses—dust and debris can fall out of the airbox.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • Trim clip tool (plastic)
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.
  • 🧼 Have a shop towel ready so dirt doesn’t fall into the intake tube.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and find the airbox

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the air filter housing (the black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
  • Wipe loose dust around the airbox seam using a shop towel so debris doesn’t drop inside when opened.

Step 2: Release the airbox cover

  • Release the metal latches/clips around the airbox by hand; if one is tight, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver (medium).
  • If your airbox uses locating tabs, lift the cover slightly and slide it to unhook the tabs.
  • Don’t force it—something is still latched.

Step 3: If needed, loosen the intake tube clamp (variant)

  • Some setups have the airbox lid held back by the intake tube. If the lid won’t open enough, gently loosen the clamp at the airbox end using a flathead screwdriver (medium).
  • Tightening note: Re-tighten the clamp until snug (no published torque is typically specified for this clamp in normal service).

Step 4: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the airbox lid enough to access the filter, then pull the filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the airbox for leaves/sand.

Step 5: Clean the airbox sealing surfaces

  • Wipe the inside rim where the filter seals using a shop towel.
  • If there’s debris in the bottom, lift it out with the shop towel (avoid pushing dirt into the intake opening).

Step 6: Install the new air filter correctly

  • Drop the new filter into the airbox the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure it sits fully flat and the rubber edge is evenly seated all the way around.
  • A crooked filter can leak dirt past it.

Step 7: Close the airbox and secure it

  • Close the airbox lid and make sure any tabs are aligned before pushing it down.
  • Re-latch all airbox clips by hand.
  • If you loosened the intake clamp, tighten it using a flathead screwdriver (medium) until snug.

Step 8: Quick final check

  • Gently tug on the airbox lid to confirm it’s locked and not lifting up.
  • Visually confirm the intake tube is seated and the clamp is secure.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • đź‘‚ Listen for whistling/hissing near the airbox (can indicate a lid not fully latched or a loose clamp).
  • 🛠️ If you hear an air leak, shut the engine off and re-check the filter seating and latches.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
