🔧 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your 1500’s engine air filter keeps dirt out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, can improve throttle response, and helps protect the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the cooling fan and belt area.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was running.
  • Assumption: your 1500 uses a clip/screw-top airbox.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing (airbox)

  • Find the large black plastic box near the front/side of the engine bay.
  • Look for the intake tube leaving the box toward the engine.
  • Use a small flashlight to spot the metal clips and/or screws around the airbox lid.

Step 2: Release the airbox lid

  • If your airbox has metal clips, pop them open using a flat trim tool (a trim tool is a flat plastic pry tool that helps prevent damage).
  • If your airbox uses screws, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet, or use a flathead screwdriver (medium) if they are slotted.
  • Loosen only enough to lift the lid—do not force anything.

Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the airbox lid straight up. If it feels stuck, check for a missed clip/screw and use a flashlight to inspect.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Note how the filter sits (which side faces up) so the new one goes in the same way.

Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing surface

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe dirt/leaves out of the lower airbox.
  • Do not push debris down the intake tube.
  • Tip: Wipe the rim where the filter seals.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the airbox in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around the edges.
  • If it looks “pinched” or won’t sit flat, remove it and re-seat it.

Step 6: Close and secure the airbox

  • Lower the lid carefully so it doesn’t shift the filter.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or snug the screws using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (or flathead screwdriver (medium)).
  • Do not overtighten—airbox screws are easy to strip in plastic.

Step 7: Final check

  • Use a flashlight to confirm the lid is evenly closed with no gaps.
  • Make sure no tools or towels are left in the engine bay.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling near the airbox (a sign the lid isn’t sealed).
  • If you hear a noise, shut the engine off and re-check the clips/screws and filter seating.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
