🔧 1500 - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your engine and helps it breathe properly. On your 1500, the filter sits in the black plastic air box in the engine bay and is held in by clips (and sometimes an intake hose clamp).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools, dirt, and loose rags out of the intake tube (anything that falls in can be sucked into the engine).
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • 8mm nut driver
  • Shop vacuum
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Pop the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.
  • Have your new air filter ready and keep the packaging closed until install.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Find the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to locate the large black plastic air box (the air filter housing) with a big tube (intake tube) going toward the engine.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Unclip the metal retaining clips on the air box using your fingers, or gently pry with a flat-blade screwdriver if they’re tight.
  • If the cover won’t lift enough, loosen the intake tube clamp at the air box using an 8mm nut driver (a nut driver is a screwdriver-style tool that turns small hex clamps).

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the air box lid up and away enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Tip: Note how the rubber edge sits.

Step 4: Clean out the air box (quickly)

  • Use a shop vacuum to vacuum out loose dust/leaves from the lower air box.
  • Do not let anything fall into the intake tube opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge is fully seated all the way around and the filter is not pinched.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-latch all the clips by hand.
  • If you loosened the intake clamp, tighten it with the 8mm nut driver until snug (tight enough that the tube can’t twist by hand).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for a hissing/whistling sound near the air box (that can mean the lid or intake tube isn’t sealed).
  • Recheck that all clips are fully latched and the intake clamp is snug.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
