šŸ”§ Challenger - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Challenger’s engine air filter cleans the air before it enters the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps performance consistency, and can improve fuel economy if the old filter is dirty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Let the engine cool before working near the intake and radiator area.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers/tools clear of the radiator fan area (it can run unexpectedly on some vehicles).
  • āš ļø Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flat trim tool
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air filter housing (airbox) at the front of the engine bay.
  • Have a rag handy for dust.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the airbox

  • Use a flashlight to find the airbox lid and the retaining clips around the edge.
  • Use a flat trim tool to gently pop the airbox clips open (they hinge and snap; don’t pry hard).
  • If the lid feels stuck, wiggle it by hand while the clips are open. Don’t force plastic parts.

Step 2: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the airbox lid enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the whole housing).
  • Pull the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to look inside the lower airbox for leaves or heavy dirt.

Step 3: Clean the airbox sealing surface

  • With the filter out, wipe the airbox rim (where the filter seals) using a clean rag (no tools required).
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube opening. Keep the opening pointed upward.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower airbox by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully down in the tray all the way around (an uneven filter can let dirt past).

Step 5: Close and latch the airbox

  • Lower the airbox lid into position by hand, aligning the edges.
  • Snap each clip closed by hand; use the flat trim tool only if needed to guide it (no prying).
  • Visually check the lid gap all the way around—there should be no side left ā€œpopped up.ā€

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling (can indicate the airbox lid isn’t sealed).
  • Recheck that all airbox clips are fully latched.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
