📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
- 🔥 Open the hood and allow the engine to cool if it was recently driven.
- 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- 📦 The air filter box is on the passenger side of the engine bay, connected to the large black intake tube.
- 💡 A “clip” is a small spring latch that holds the air box lid closed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the interior hood release.
- Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front of the hood.
- Raise the hood fully and make sure it is secure.
Step 2: Find the Air Filter Box
- Use your safety glasses and look at the passenger side of the engine bay.
- Find the large black plastic air filter box connected to the intake tube.
- The intake tube is the wide black hose that carries filtered air toward the engine.
Step 3: Release the Air Box Clips
- Use your hand to flip open the metal spring clips around the air box lid.
- If a clip is stiff, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it open.
- Do not bend the clips.
Step 4: Lift the Air Box Lid
- Use both hands to carefully lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter.
- Do not pull hard on the intake tube or wiring nearby.
- No bolts are normally removed for this filter service.
Step 5: Remove the Old Air Filter
- Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower air box.
- Notice which side faces up before removing it fully.
- Check for leaves, sand, or heavy dirt inside the lower air box.
Step 6: Clean the Air Box
- Use a shop vacuum to remove loose dirt, leaves, and debris from the lower air box.
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the inside sealing edge of the air box.
- Do not push dirt into the intake tube opening.
- Keep debris out of the engine.
Step 7: Install the New Air Filter
- Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
- Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
- The filter must not be folded, pinched, or sitting crooked.
Step 8: Reinstall the Air Box Lid
- Use both hands to lower the air box lid evenly onto the new filter.
- Make sure the lid tabs are seated correctly in the lower air box.
- Use your hand to snap each metal spring clip fully closed.
- No torque spec applies because the air box uses clips instead of fasteners.
Step 9: Final Visual Check
- Use your safety glasses and inspect the air box seam all the way around.
- Make sure no filter edge is sticking out between the lid and lower box.
- Use your hand to gently wiggle the air box lid and confirm it is secure.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- ✅ Listen for hissing or whistling sounds near the air box, which can mean the lid is not sealed.
- ✅ If the engine runs rough, shut it off and recheck that the filter and lid are seated correctly.
- ✅ No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required for this repair.
