🔧 Grand Cherokee - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter on your Grand Cherokee is a simple maintenance job that helps your 5.7L V8 breathe properly. A clean filter improves airflow, protects the engine from dust, and can help maintain fuel economy and throttle response.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the air intake box.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and fingers away from belts and moving parts.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed; dirt can enter the engine.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Clean shop towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift into Park.
  • 🔒 Set the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Turn the engine off and allow it to cool for a few minutes.
  • 🔑 Keep the key fob away from the vehicle so the ignition is not accidentally turned on.
  • 📦 Open the hood and locate the black plastic air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Move to the front of the vehicle and release the secondary hood latch by hand.
  • Raise the hood fully and make sure it is secure.

Step 2: Locate the Air Filter Box

  • Use a flashlight if needed and look on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • The air filter box is the large black plastic box connected to the intake tube.
  • The intake tube is the large plastic tube that carries filtered air from the air box to the engine.

Step 3: Release the Air Box Clips

  • Use your hand to unclip the metal retaining clips around the air filter box lid.
  • If a clip is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to help pop it loose.
  • A flat-blade screwdriver has a straight, flat tip used for prying or turning slotted screws.
  • Do not force plastic parts.

Step 4: Lift the Air Box Lid

  • Use both hands to lift the air box lid upward just enough to access the filter.
  • Do not pull hard on the intake tube or wiring nearby.
  • If the lid feels stuck, check that all clips are fully released.

Step 5: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower air box.
  • Notice which side faces up before removing it completely.
  • Check for leaves, sand, or debris inside the lower air box.

Step 6: Clean the Air Box

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust and debris from the lower air box.
  • Do not push dirt into the intake tube opening.
  • Do not use water or spray cleaners inside the air box.

Step 7: Install the New Engine Air Filter

  • Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
  • Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
  • The seal is the soft outer edge that keeps unfiltered air from bypassing the filter.
  • A flat seal prevents dust leaks.

Step 8: Refit the Air Box Lid

  • Use both hands to lower the air box lid squarely onto the new filter.
  • Make sure the lid tabs are seated correctly in the lower air box before clipping it shut.
  • If the lid will not close easily, use your hands to reposition the filter and try again.

Step 9: Secure the Air Box Clips

  • Use your hand to snap each metal retaining clip back into place.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver only if a clip needs gentle help seating.
  • No torque spec applies because the air box lid uses clips, not bolts.

Step 10: Final Visual Check

  • Use your hands to lightly tug the air box lid and confirm it is secure.
  • Make sure no tools, towels, or packaging are left in the engine bay.
  • Close the hood firmly.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Grand Cherokee and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • 👂 Listen for air hissing around the air box, which can mean the lid is not seated correctly.
  • ⚠️ If the engine runs rough or the check engine light appears, turn the engine off and recheck the air box lid and filter seal.
  • 🗓️ Recheck the filter at normal maintenance intervals, or sooner if driving in dusty areas.
