🔧 Sienna - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the engine. On your Sienna, this is a quick service that usually only requires opening the airbox, swapping the filter, and making sure the housing seals correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Make sure the engine is off and cool before starting.
  • Keep loose clothing and hands away from hot or moving engine parts.
  • Do not drive with the airbox open; dirt can enter the engine.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the engine off and open the hood.
  • Let the engine cool if it has been running recently.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and find the black plastic airbox near the engine.
  • The air filter sits inside this housing.

Step 2: Release the airbox cover

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to release any clips or retaining tabs.
  • If your cover uses clips only, open them by hand.
  • Lift the cover gently.

Step 3: Remove the old filter

  • Lift the old engine air filter straight out of the housing.
  • Check for leaves, dirt, or debris inside the airbox.

Step 4: Clean the airbox

  • Use a clean rag or your hand to remove loose debris from the airbox.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake opening.
  • Keep the intake side clean.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the edge seals all the way around.

Step 6: Reinstall the airbox cover

  • Put the cover back on carefully so the filter does not shift.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver if any clips need help closing.
  • Make sure every latch or clip is fully locked.

Step 7: Final check

  • Close the hood.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual air hissing or rattling.
  • If the cover is not sealed, reopen it and check the filter seating again.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the airbox is fully closed and latched.
  • Check that the engine runs normally with no warning lights.
  • Inspect the old filter to see how dirty it was.
