🔧 Patriot - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Patriot’s engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner housing (air box) and keeps dirt out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep tools, fingers, and loose clothing away from the radiator fan area.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air filter removed (dirt can be sucked in).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flat-blade screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Flashlight
- Shop vacuum

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Have a towel ready so no dirt falls into the air box.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air box
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air cleaner housing (air box) near the engine bay, with a large intake tube running from it.
Step 2: Release the air box cover
- Unclip the metal/plastic retaining clips around the air box by hand.
- If your Patriot uses a hose clamp or screws at the intake tube connection, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet or a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Don’t force it—clips usually pop open.
Step 3: Lift the air box lid
- Lift the lid straight up enough to access the filter.
- If the intake tube is tight, gently wiggle the lid while keeping the tube from twisting too hard.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out of the air box.
- Use a microfiber towel to cover the open intake area briefly so debris can’t drop in.
Step 5: Clean the air box (quickly and safely)
- Use a shop vacuum to remove leaves/dust from the bottom of the air box.
- Wipe sealing surfaces with a clean microfiber towel.
- Do not vacuum past the intake opening.
Step 6: Install the new air filter
- Drop the new filter into the air box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber seal (if equipped) is fully seated all the way around.
Step 7: Reinstall and secure the air box lid
- Lower the lid back into place, making sure it aligns with the bottom half evenly.
- Re-latch all clips by hand.
- If you loosened a clamp/screws, snug them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet or flat-blade screwdriver (snug only—no torque spec typically provided for these clamps).
Step 8: Final check
- Use a flashlight to confirm no tools or rags are left in the engine bay.
- Confirm the air box lid is fully closed with no gaps.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
- Listen for a hissing/whistling sound (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
- If you hear a leak, shut it off and re-check clip/clamp seating.
