🔧 Odyssey - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of your engine and helps maintain smooth performance and fuel economy. On your Odyssey, the filter sits inside a black plastic air box in the engine bay and swaps out in just a few minutes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers and loose clothing away from the radiator fan; it can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat trim tool
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air cleaner housing

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box (air cleaner housing) near the front/side of the engine bay with a large intake tube attached.

Step 2: Release the air box cover

  • Look for the metal clips or retaining points around the edge of the air box lid.
  • Release the clips by hand. If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a flat trim tool.
  • If your air box uses screws instead of clips, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Don’t force plastic; it can crack.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the lid completely).
  • Pull the old filter straight out with gloved hands (nitrile gloves).
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out any loose dirt in the bottom of the air box.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new engine air filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter’s rubber edge is fully seated all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 5: Refit and secure the air box cover

  • Lower the air box lid back into place, making sure the edges line up evenly.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or reinstall screws with a Phillips screwdriver until snug.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is closed evenly all around (an air leak can cause rough idle or a check engine light).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling (can mean the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • If a warning light comes on, re-check that the air box is fully closed and the intake tube is still connected.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
