🔧 Optima - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your A4’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps performance, and is one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine so you don’t burn your hands.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, clothing, and tools away from moving belts and fans.
  • ⚠️ On your Optima hybrid, do not touch or unplug orange high-voltage wiring.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for an air filter change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and turn the car OFF.
  • 🧊 Let the engine bay cool for at least 15–30 minutes.
  • 🔦 Have your flashlight ready so you can see the air box clips clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

  • Use your hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.

Step 2: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box (the “air box” is the plastic housing that holds the air filter).
  • Look for metal clips and/or a hose clamp near the air box lid.

Step 3: Unclip the air box lid

  • Release the metal clips by hand. If a clip is stubborn, gently help it with a flathead screwdriver (medium).
  • Tip: Don’t pry hard—clips can snap.

Step 4: Lift the air box lid

  • Lift the lid just enough to access the filter.
  • If the lid won’t lift, look for a hose clamp on the intake tube and loosen it slightly with a flathead screwdriver (medium).

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe any loose dirt from the air box sealing edge.
  • Do not push dirt down into the intake opening.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new engine air filter the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber edge (if equipped) is fully seated all the way around.

Step 7: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-latch all clips by hand.
  • If you loosened a hose clamp, snug it with a flathead screwdriver (medium) (tight enough that the tube won’t rotate).

Step 8: Final check

  • Use a flashlight to confirm the lid is evenly closed on all sides.
  • Remove tools and shop towel from the engine bay, then close the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • 🚗 Start the car and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Listen for any whistling/hissing (a sign the air box lid or intake tube isn’t sealed).
  • If a check engine light comes on, re-check that the air box lid is fully clipped and the intake tube clamp is snug.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)
