🔧 RX350 - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing your RX350’s engine air filter helps the engine breathe properly, which can improve drivability and fuel economy and prevent dirt from entering the engine. This is a quick job because the filter sits inside a plastic air box in the engine bay.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition fully OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- 🧹 Don’t let dirt or leaves fall into the intake tube while the filter is out.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- 🔦 Have your flashlight ready so you can clearly see the air box clips and filter seating surface.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and locate the air filter housing
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the black plastic air filter box (air cleaner housing) near the front/side of the engine bay.
- The air filter box will have a large intake tube connected to it and metal spring clips (or latches) holding the lid down.
Step 2: Unclip the air box lid
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Release the retaining clips by hand (no force). If a clip is stubborn, wiggle it gently—don’t pry hard.
- Don’t disconnect sensors unless necessary.
Step 3: Lift the lid and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter. Support it with your hand so it doesn’t stress the intake tube.
- Pull the old filter straight out.
- Use a flashlight to note how the filter is oriented (the rubber sealing edge should sit flat in the box).
Step 4: Clean the air box (lightly) and install the new filter
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust from the lower air box.
- If there are leaves/sand in corners, use a small soft brush to gently sweep debris out, then wipe again with the shop towel.
- Install the new filter into the lower box the same way the old one came out.
- Make sure the filter sits fully down and the sealing edge is not folded or pinched.
Step 5: Re-seat the lid and reclip the housing
- Lower the air box lid carefully, keeping the filter aligned.
- Snap all clips back into place by hand. The lid should sit evenly all the way around.
- Do a quick visual check with the flashlight for any gaps around the air box seam.
âś… After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds. Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
- 🧰 If you notice rough idle right away, shut it off and re-check that the filter is seated and all clips are fully latched.
- 🗓️ Write the date/mileage on the filter box (optional) to track service.
