🔧 Equinox - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This helps your engine breathe clean air and can improve fuel economy and performance.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Park the Equinox on level ground, shift to P (Park), and set the parking brake.
  • 🛑 Turn the engine off and remove the key from the ignition before opening the hood.
  • 🧤 Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes if it was just running so you don’t touch hot parts.
  • 🕶 Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and hands from dust and sharp plastic edges.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" 1/4" drive extension
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium size)
  • Clean shop rag
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small soft brush

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter element (for 2.4L) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Equinox on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and turn the engine off.
  • Open the hood using the hood release inside the cabin, then release the hood latch at the front of the vehicle and secure the hood prop rod.
  • Locate the engine air filter housing: it is the black plastic box with a large intake hose near the front/driver side of the engine bay.
  • Make sure you have the new air filter handy before you open the housing so dust doesn’t blow into the air box.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • Find the engine air box: a black rectangular plastic box on the driver side front of the engine bay with a large accordion-style hose going to the engine.
  • Look for any clips or bolts on the top cover.

Step 2: Identify fasteners on the air box cover

  • Most 2.4L Equinox models use a combination of metal clips and/or 10mm bolts on the air box cover.
  • Check all sides of the cover so you don’t miss a clip or bolt.
  • Remember where each fastener goes as you remove it.

Step 3: Release the clips and remove bolts

  • If there are clips:
    • Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry and release each clip holding the cover.
    • Flip the clips away from the cover so they don’t snap back.
  • If there are bolts:
    • Use the 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen and remove each 10mm bolt securing the cover.
    • Place the bolts in a safe spot so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
    • Reinstallation torque (if specified): 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) — this is just snug, not very tight.

Step 4: Lift the air box cover

  • Gently lift the air box cover upward. It may be hinged on one side, so open it like a book.
  • If it feels stuck, check again for any hidden clip or bolt before forcing it.
  • You do not need to disconnect the big air hose for this job; just tilt the cover enough to access the filter.
  • Move slowly to avoid cracking the plastic.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • Note how the filter is sitting in the box: which side is up and which side faces the engine.
  • Grab the filter by one end and pull it straight up and out of the housing.
  • Be careful not to drop dirt into the bottom of the air box.
  • You can take a quick photo to remember orientation.

Step 6: Clean the air box

  • Use the small soft brush to gently loosen dust and debris in the bottom of the air box.
  • Use the clean shop rag to wipe out loose dirt. Do not use water or cleaners inside the air box.
  • Make sure nothing falls into the air intake opening leading to the engine.
  • Clean box helps the new filter work better.

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one. The size and shape should match.
  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one. The rubber sealing edge should sit flat all around the edges of the box.
  • Press gently on the edges to make sure it is fully seated and not twisted or folded.
  • No gaps should be visible around the rubber seal.

Step 8: Refit the air box cover

  • Lower the air box cover back into place, making sure the cover edge fits into any grooves or tabs on the lower half of the box.
  • Check that no part of the new filter is sticking out or pinched by the cover.
  • If the cover does not sit flat, open it again and re-check filter seating.

Step 9: Secure clips and bolts

  • If you have clips:
    • Snap each clip back into place by hand. You should feel or hear a click.
  • If you have bolts:
    • Install each 10mm bolt by hand a few turns to avoid cross-threading.
    • Use the 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to tighten the bolts until they are just snug.
    • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) if you have a small torque wrench. Do not overtighten; the cover is plastic.
  • Go around the cover once more to confirm all clips/bolts are secure.

Step 10: Final checks

  • Look around the air box and intake hose to make sure nothing is loose or disconnected.
  • Remove any tools or rags from the engine bay.
  • Lower the hood carefully and make sure it latches fully.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔑 Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Listen for any unusual whistling or hissing near the air box, which could indicate a loose cover or hose.
  • đźš— Take a short drive and make sure the engine runs smoothly with normal power and throttle response.
  • 📝 No special computer reset or scan tool is needed for this repair.
  • đź“… Plan to replace the engine air filter about every 15,000–30,000 miles (or sooner in dusty areas).
