🔧 Equinox - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Equinox’s engine air filter sits in the air cleaner box and keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and can prevent rough running caused by a restricted filter.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • đź‘“ Keep dirt out of the intake tube and air box while the filter is out.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Small flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and locate the air cleaner box on the passenger-side front of the engine bay (the large black plastic box connected to the intake tube).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air cleaner box

  • Use a small flashlight to identify the air cleaner box lid and the clips or screws that hold it closed.

Step 2: Release the air cleaner box lid

  • If your lid uses metal clips, pop them open using a flathead screwdriver (a flat-tip tool that pries clips open).
  • If your lid uses screws, loosen them with an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Lift the lid up enough to remove the filter. Don’t yank on the intake tube.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Pull the filter straight up and out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dirt out of the air box only (do not push dirt into the intake opening).

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand, matching the shape so it sits flat all the way around.
  • Check the filter’s rubber edge is fully seated with no gaps. Uneven seating can trigger a whistling noise.

Step 5: Close and secure the air cleaner box

  • Lower the lid back into place by hand.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand, or snug the screws with an 8mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (do not overtighten—plastic can crack).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20-30 seconds.
  • Listen for air leaks (hissing/whistling). If you hear one, shut off the engine and re-seat the filter and lid.
  • Take a short drive and confirm normal throttle response.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
