🔧 SRX - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing the engine air filter keeps dirt out of your engine and helps maintain smooth power and fuel economy. On your SRX, the filter sits inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay and is a simple DIY job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the engine bay.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers, tools, and clothing away from moving parts.
- ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flathead screwdriver (medium)
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Clean shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake and turn the ignition OFF.
- Open the hood and locate the black plastic air filter box (air cleaner housing) near the front/side of the engine bay.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air box and fasteners
- Use a flashlight to find the air box seams and the metal clips and/or screws holding the lid on.
- The air box is the plastic “filter container.”
Step 2: Loosen the intake clamp (if it blocks the lid)
- If the lid cannot lift due to the intake tube, loosen the clamp using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet (or a flathead screwdriver (medium) if it’s a screw-style clamp).
- Loosen only enough to let the tube flex—do not fully remove the clamp.
Step 3: Unfasten the air box lid
- Release the metal clips by hand (wear work gloves), or remove any lid screws using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Lift the air box lid upward. If it’s tight, gently wiggle it—do not force it.
Step 4: Remove the old air filter
- Pull the filter straight out by hand.
- Use the flashlight to note how it sits (which side faces up and how the edges seal).
Step 5: Clean the air box (lightly)
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust inside the lower air box.
- Do not let dirt fall down the intake opening.
Step 6: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
- Make sure the rubber edge sits flat all the way around (this is the “seal” that keeps dirt out).
- If it rocks or won’t sit flat, it’s misaligned.
Step 7: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the lid back into place by hand, ensuring it seats evenly on the air box.
- Re-latch the clips by hand or reinstall screws using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (snug, do not over-tighten).
Step 8: Re-tighten the intake clamp (if loosened)
- Tighten the clamp using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet (or flathead screwdriver (medium)).
- Make sure the tube is fully seated and the clamp is snug so there are no air leaks.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
- Listen for a hissing sound (could indicate a loose clamp or lid not seated).
- Do a quick visual check that all clips/screws are secured and no tools are left in the engine bay.
