🔧 Tucson - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Tucson’s engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner box and keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it is quick and helps performance and fuel economy, especially if you drive in dusty areas.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; engine must be OFF.
- ⚠️ Do not drop anything into the intake opening.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Flat-blade screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts

- Engine air filter - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool if it was running.
- Locate the air cleaner box (large black plastic box) near the engine with intake tubing attached.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the air cleaner box
- Use a flashlight to find the metal retaining clips around the air cleaner box lid.
- Unclip each retaining clip by hand; if one is stubborn, gently pry it with a flat-blade screwdriver.
- Lift the air cleaner box lid enough to access the filter. Don’t force the intake tube.
Step 2: Remove the old filter
- Pull the air filter straight up and out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Note the direction it sits (the rubber seal edge should face the air box rim).
Step 3: Clean and inspect the air box
- Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box.
- Wipe out loose dust/debris with a clean rag (do not push debris into any opening).
Step 4: Install the new filter
- Set the new engine air filter into the lower air box by hand.
- Make sure it sits flat and the rubber seal is fully seated all the way around. A crooked filter can leak dirt.
Step 5: Reinstall the air cleaner box lid
- Lower the lid back into place by hand, aligning the lid tabs/edges with the lower box.
- Snap all retaining clips closed; use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to help guide a clip into place.
- Give the lid a gentle tug to confirm it’s latched evenly on all sides.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
- Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
- Recheck that every clip is fully latched and the lid is seated evenly.
