🔧 Tucson - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Tucson’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and can improve throttle response if the old filter is clogged.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • 🛑 Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the air box or intake tube.
  • 🛑 Do not unplug sensors unless necessary; the airflow sensor is delicate.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flathead screwdriver (medium)
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes.
  • Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (it connects to a large air intake tube).

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Use a flathead screwdriver (medium) to help lift the metal retaining clips (if they’re tight), then unclip them by hand.
  • Don’t pry hard—clips can bend.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the lid enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to fully remove the lid).
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand and keep it upright so debris doesn’t fall.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe out loose dirt in the lower air box.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box by hand, making sure it sits flat in the tray.
  • Confirm the rubber edge (gasket) is fully seated all the way around.

Step 5: Close the air box and re-secure the clips

  • Lower the air box lid into position by hand.
  • Snap each clip closed by hand; use the flathead screwdriver (medium) only if you need gentle help pushing a clip over.
  • Do a quick tug test on the lid—there should be no gap.

âś… After Repair

  • đź‘‚ Start the engine and listen for any loud hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed.
  • Visually re-check that all clips are fully latched and the intake tube wasn’t knocked loose.
  • If a check engine light appears afterward, re-check that everything is sealed and no sensor connector was disturbed.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
