🔧 Engine Air Filter - Replacement

Your Corolla uses a serviceable engine air filter inside the air cleaner box on top of the engine bay. Replacing it is quick and helps keep dirt out of the engine so it can breathe properly and run efficiently.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and let it cool before starting.
  • Keep loose tools and clothing away from the engine bay.
  • Make sure the air box lid seals fully when reinstalled.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and secure it fully.
  • Let the engine cool if the vehicle was recently driven.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter housing

  • Locate the air cleaner box on top of the engine bay.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen any housing screws if equipped.
  • Release the retaining clips by hand or use a trim clip tool if they are tight.
  • Lift the lid gently.

Step 2: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the old filter straight out of the air box.
  • Note how the filter sits in the housing so the new one goes in the same way.
  • Check the air box for leaves, dust, or debris.

Step 3: Clean the housing

  • Wipe out loose dirt inside the air box with a clean cloth.
  • Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube.
  • A clean seal helps prevent dust leaks.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the housing the same way the old one was seated.
  • Make sure the filter edge sits flat all the way around.

Step 5: Reinstall the air box lid

  • Lower the lid straight down without pinching the filter.
  • Reinstall and tighten any screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Snap the retaining clips closed by hand.
  • Listen for each clip to click.

Step 6: Final check

  • Make sure the air box is fully closed and the intake tube is connected.
  • Close the hood.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual hissing or whistling.
  • Make sure the air box lid is sealed and clips are secure.
  • Replace the filter at regular service intervals or sooner if driving in dusty conditions.
