🔧 Corolla - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Corolla’s engine air filter sits inside the air cleaner box and keeps dust out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow and helps fuel economy and drivability, especially if the old filter is dirty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers clear of the radiator fan area.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch or spray anything into the MAF sensor (the airflow sensor in the intake tube); it’s delicate.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes.
  • Have a flashlight ready so you can see the air box clips and filter seating surface.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air cleaner box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air cleaner box connected to the large intake tube (near the front/driver-side of the engine bay).

Step 2: Release the air cleaner box cover

  • Unclip the metal retaining clips by hand; if they’re tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
  • If your air box uses small bolts instead of clips on one side, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" socket extension.
  • Don’t force it—clips pop free.

Step 3: Lift the cover and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box top enough to slide the filter out (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand and note how it sits in the box.

Step 4: Clean the sealing surface

  • Use your flashlight to inspect inside the lower air box for leaves/dirt.
  • Wipe the air box rim with a clean rag (no tools required) so the new filter seals well.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box by hand, fully seated and flat (no corners folded).
  • Make sure the filter’s edge sits evenly all the way around the box.

Step 6: Reinstall and secure the air box cover

  • Lower the air box cover back into position by hand.
  • Reattach the clips by hand until they snap into place.
  • If bolts were removed, install them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" socket extension, then Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds.
  • Listen for hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box isn’t fully clipped/bolted closed.
  • Do a quick visual check that all clips are latched and the cover sits evenly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
