🔧 Corolla - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Corolla’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain good airflow, smooth acceleration, and fuel economy. This is a quick under-hood job with no fluids and usually no tools.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers and loose clothing away from the radiator fan area.
  • 🛑 Do not drop debris into the air box or intake tube.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔦 Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the air filter box (black plastic box connected to the intake tube).
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight to locate the air filter housing (air box) in the engine bay.
  • It’s the rectangular black plastic box with metal retaining clips around the edge.

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Use your hands (and a flashlight if needed) to find the metal clips on the air box.
  • Flip each clip open. They should pop free with firm finger pressure.
  • Tip: Support the lid so it doesn’t snap back.

Step 3: Open the housing and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter. Use a flashlight to see the filter edges.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by the edge.
  • Use a shop towel to gently wipe out loose dirt inside the lower air box.

Step 4: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around (no corners folded or lifted).
  • Tip: If it won’t sit flat, it’s not seated.

Step 5: Close the housing and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Use your hands to snap each retaining clip closed.
  • Use a flashlight to check the lid gap—there should be an even seal all around.

âś… After Repair

  • âś… Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • âś… Listen for a hissing/whistling sound (can mean the air box isn’t fully clipped).
  • âś… Re-check that all clips are fully latched and the air box lid is seated evenly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$100 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$65 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
