🔧 Forester - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Forester’s engine air filter sits in the airbox in the engine bay and keeps dust out of the turbo engine. Replacing it restores airflow and helps performance and fuel economy, especially if it’s dirty or clogged.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers away from the cooling fans—they can turn on unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Do not drive with the airbox left unlatched or open (unfiltered air can damage the engine).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Flathead screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3" extension for ratchet

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for at least 15–30 minutes if it was running.
- Locate the airbox (black plastic box) connected to the large intake tube going toward the turbo.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate and inspect the airbox latches/fasteners
- Use a flashlight to look at the airbox seam and find what holds it closed.
- You’ll typically see either metal spring clips, or clips plus a small bolt/screw.
Step 2: Unfasten the airbox
- If your airbox uses spring clips: pry each clip open using a flathead screwdriver. Push clip away from the seam.
- If your airbox also has a bolt: remove it using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
Step 3: Open the airbox and remove the old filter
- Lift the airbox lid up slightly (you usually don’t need to fully remove the lid).
- Pull the filter straight out with your gloved hands.
- Use a flashlight to confirm which way the filter sits (note the direction before removing it completely).
Step 4: Clean out the airbox (quick check)
- Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the airbox for leaves or heavy dirt.
- If needed, wipe the inside carefully using a clean rag (do not let debris fall into the intake tube).
Step 5: Install the new engine air filter
- Place the new filter into the airbox the same direction as the old one.
- Make sure the filter’s rubber edge sits flat all the way around (no pinched corners).
- Flat and fully seated prevents unfiltered air.
Step 6: Close and secure the airbox
- Close the airbox lid and align the seam.
- Reinstall any bolt using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension (snug, do not over-tighten the plastic).
- Re-latch the spring clips by hand; if needed, guide them with a flathead screwdriver.
- Use a flashlight to verify the airbox seam is closed evenly.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
- Listen for any whistling/hissing near the airbox (a sign the lid isn’t sealed).
- Take a short test drive and confirm no check-engine light appears.
