🔧 Forester - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Forester’s engine air filter sits inside the air box (the plastic housing connected to the intake tube). Replacing it keeps airflow clean, helps performance, and protects the engine from dust and debris.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • 🛑 Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.
  • Have a towel ready to wipe dust from the air box sealing surface.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to find the air box on the driver-side front area of the engine bay (black plastic box with an intake tube attached).

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Use gloved hands to flip open the metal retaining clips around the edge of the air box cover.
  • If a clip feels stuck, wiggle—don’t force.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover upward (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the old filter straight out using gloved hands.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust and debris from the lower air box and the edge where the filter seals.
  • Do not let dirt fall down the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box using gloved hands.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated in the grooves all the way around.
  • A crooked filter can let dust bypass.

Step 6: Reinstall the air box cover and latch clips

  • Lower the cover back into place.
  • Snap all retaining clips closed using gloved hands.
  • Do a quick tug-check to confirm the cover is fully latched.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any loud hissing or whistling (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check that all clips are fully closed and the cover sits evenly.
  • If your Forester has a maintenance reminder you track manually, note the mileage/date.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)
