🔧 Impreza - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Impreza’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps fuel economy, and prevents dirt from wearing out the engine over time.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not drop tools or debris into the air box or intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (small)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to P.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and support it securely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter box

  • Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (it connects to the large intake tube).

Step 2: Unclip the air box cover

  • Use your hands to release the metal retaining clips around the air box cover.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it open (do not force it).
  • Tip: Hold the cover so it doesn’t pop up.

Step 3: Open the air box

  • Lift the top half of the air box enough to access the filter.
  • Do not pull hard on any attached hoses or wiring.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom of the air box for leaves/dirt.

Step 5: Clean out the air box (lightly)

  • Use your nitrile gloves to remove any large debris by hand.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm nothing is left inside.
  • Tip: Don’t wipe dirt into the intake opening.

Step 6: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new filter into the lower air box by hand.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully in the groove all the way around (no gaps).

Step 7: Close and re-clip the air box

  • Lower the air box cover back into place by hand.
  • Reinstall the clips by hand until they snap closed.
  • If needed, use the small flat-blade screwdriver to help seat a clip gently.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any whistling/hissing (can mean the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Re-check the clips and confirm the air box cover is seated evenly.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)
