šŸ”§ Yukon - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the engine air filter helps your Yukon breathe properly, which supports smooth power, good fuel economy, and clean airflow to the engine. This job is quick and mostly tool-free, and it’s one of the easiest maintenance items you can do yourself.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the MAF sensor (mass airflow sensor). It’s a delicate airflow sensor in the intake tube.
  • āš ļø Don’t drop dirt or leaves into the air box or intake tube.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for an air filter change.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towel
  • Small vacuum (wet/dry or handheld)
  • Flathead screwdriver

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to PARK.
  • Set the parking brake and turn the ignition fully OFF.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool for a few minutes.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Open the hood and look for the large black plastic air box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • The air box connects to a large intake tube that runs toward the engine.

Step 2: Unlatch the air box cover

  • Use your hands to flip open the metal retaining clips on the air box lid.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a flathead screwdriver gently to help pry the clip open. Don’t force it—clips can snap.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid just enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old air filter straight out with your hands.
  • Use a shop towel to cover the opening if you need a moment—this helps prevent debris falling in.

Step 4: Clean out the air box (lightly)

  • Use a small vacuum to remove loose leaves, sand, or dirt from the bottom of the air box.
  • Wipe the sealing surfaces (where the filter’s rubber edge sits) with a shop towel.
  • Do not vacuum or touch any sensor in the intake tube.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and the rubber seal is fully seated all the way around. A crooked filter can leak unfiltered air.

Step 6: Close the air box and secure it

  • Lower the air box lid back into place.
  • Re-close all retaining clips by hand until they snap fully shut.
  • Do a quick visual check that the lid is evenly closed on all sides.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds. It should run smoothly.
  • Listen for whistling or hissing near the air box—this can mean the lid isn’t sealed.
  • Re-check that all clips are fully latched and nothing was left in the engine bay.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$50 (parts only)

You Save: $40-$90 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
