🔧 Tundra - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Replacing your A4’s engine air filter helps the engine breathe clean air, which supports good power, fuel economy, and smooth running. On your Tundra, the filter sits inside the air box in the engine bay and is a quick, no-jack repair.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

Assumption: stock factory air box (no aftermarket intake).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt and tools out of the intake tube (the snorkel leading to the engine).
  • ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air box open or the filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Set the parking brake and turn the ignition off.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes if it was running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (it connects to the large intake tube).
  • Use a flashlight if needed to see the clips/fasteners around the box.

Step 2: Unclip or loosen the air box lid

  • Release the metal clips holding the lid down by hand; if tight, gently help with a flathead screwdriver.
  • If your air box uses bolts or a hose clamp at the inlet, loosen with a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Don’t force plastic—wiggle it gently.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the lid enough to access the filter element.
  • Pull the old filter straight out. Use a shop towel to keep your hands clean.
  • Note the filter orientation (which side faces up) so the new one goes in the same way.

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a shop towel to wipe dust from the lower air box and the lid sealing edge.
  • Do not let debris fall into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box, making sure it sits flat and fully seated in its groove.
  • Double-check the rubber edge (gasket) is not folded or pinched.

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the lid and make sure the lid lines up evenly all the way around.
  • Reinstall/retighten fasteners using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Re-latch the metal clips by hand.
  • An uneven lid can cause a vacuum leak.

Step 7: Final check

  • Verify no tools or rags are left in the engine bay.
  • Make sure the intake tube is fully connected and nothing is loose.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling/hissing (a sign the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • If you hear a leak, shut the engine off and re-seat the filter and lid.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$120 (parts + labor)

You Save: $45-$85 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
