🔧 Camry - Engine Air Filter Replacement

You’ll be replacing the engine air filter inside the black plastic air box in the engine bay. This keeps dirt and dust out of the engine so it can breathe properly and run smoothly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25–0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Make sure the engine is off and the key is removed from the ignition.
  • 🧤 Let the engine cool for at least 10–15 minutes if it was just running to avoid hot parts.
  • đź‘“ Keep loose clothing, jewelry, and hair away from moving parts in the engine bay.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flathead screwdriver (6–8 mm tip)
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop rag or microfiber cloth
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter (2.5L) - Qty: 1
  • Air box cover clips (replacement, optional) - Qty: 2–4
  • Cleaning wipes or throttle body-safe cleaner (for air box only) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Camry on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood using the hood release inside the cabin, then the latch under the front edge of the hood.
  • Use the hood prop rod to securely hold the hood open.
  • Make sure you have the new filter out of its box and oriented the same way as the old one for reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the engine air filter box

  • Stand in front of the car and look in the engine bay on the driver’s side (left side when you face the car).
  • Find the black plastic box with a large rubber hose (intake tube) going from it toward the engine. This is the air filter box.
  • It will be near the front corner on the driver’s side.

Step 2: Inspect how the air box is held closed

  • Look for metal clips at the front and/or side of the air box cover. These swing open to release the cover.
  • Some cars may also have a small 10mm bolt on a corner of the air box cover. Use the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove it if present. Torque for reinstallation: 5 Nm (4 ft-lbs).
  • Remember where each clip or bolt is for reassembly.

Step 3: Release the air box cover

  • Use your fingers to pull the metal clips away from the cover. If they are tight, gently pry up on the clip tab with the flathead screwdriver.
  • If there is a 10mm bolt, fully remove it with the 10mm socket and set it aside in a safe place.
  • Once clips and bolts are released, gently lift the front or side of the air box cover. The back edge is usually hinged or hooked.
  • Do not force the cover; it can crack.

Step 4: Open the air box enough to access the filter

  • Lift the air box cover just enough to see the filter inside. You may need to wiggle it slightly.
  • The large rubber hose attached to the cover will limit how far you can lift it—this is normal.
  • Use the flashlight to look inside and clearly see the filter edges.

Step 5: Remove the old air filter

  • Grab the edge of the filter and pull it straight up and out of the air box.
  • Note which side of the filter was facing up and how it sat in the box (rubber seal, corners, etc.).
  • Check inside the air box for leaves, dust, or debris.

Step 6: Clean the air box

  • Use the shop rag or microfiber cloth to wipe out any loose dirt or leaves from the bottom of the air box.
  • If needed, lightly dampen the rag with cleaner and wipe the plastic. Do not spray cleaner directly into the air box.
  • Keep cleaner away from sensors and wiring.

Step 7: Install the new air filter

  • Compare the new filter with the old one to ensure size and shape match.
  • Place the new filter into the air box with the rubber sealing edge sitting flat all the way around.
  • Make sure the filter sits fully down in its groove and is not tilted or pinched.
  • Run a finger around the edge to confirm it’s seated.

Step 8: Reinstall and secure the air box cover

  • Lower the air box cover back into position, making sure the rear tabs or hinges line up correctly.
  • Use one hand to gently push the cover down so it fully contacts the new filter’s rubber seal.
  • Close the metal clips by pushing them back onto the cover until they snap into place. If they resist, check that the cover is seated evenly.
  • If there was a bolt, reinstall it by hand first, then snug it with the 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet. Torque to 5 Nm (4 ft-lbs)—just snug, not very tight.

Step 9: Final checks under the hood

  • Use the flashlight to look around the air box and hose connection to be sure nothing is loose or pinched.
  • Gently wiggle the air box cover. It should not move much if the clips and bolt are secure.
  • Remove any tools and rags from the engine bay.
  • Lower the hood and make sure it’s fully latched.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. It should run smoothly with no unusual noises from the intake area.
  • Take a short, gentle drive. Throttle response may feel a bit smoother with a clean filter.
  • No scan tool or warning light reset is needed for this job.
  • Plan to check or replace the filter about every 15,000–30,000 km, sooner in dusty conditions.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40–$80 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15–$30 (parts only)

You Save: $25–$50 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2–0.3 hours.
