🔧 Camry - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Replacing your engine air filter keeps dirt out of the engine and helps it breathe properly. A clogged filter can reduce power and fuel economy, so this is a great, quick maintenance job.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of moving parts; never work near the radiator fans with the car running.
- ⚠️ Don’t drop anything into the air box or intake tube.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin

- Turn the engine off, remove the key, and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Use a flashlight to find the black plastic air box on the driver-side of the engine bay (it connects to the large intake tube).
- The air box is the “filter box.”
Step 2: Unclip the air box cover
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Release the metal retaining clips on the air box by hand (flip them outward until they pop free).
- If it’s tight, wiggle—don’t pry hard.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid just enough to pull the filter out (you usually don’t need to remove any hoses).
- Remove the old air filter straight up and out.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust/leaves from the lower air box.
- Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube.
Step 4: Install the new air filter correctly
- Insert the new filter into the lower air box.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and the rubber edge seals all the way around.
- If your filter has an airflow arrow, point it toward the engine (toward the intake tube).
Step 5: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the air box lid back into place, making sure it lines up evenly.
- Snap all the retaining clips back on by hand.
- Do a quick visual check that the lid isn’t pinching the filter.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 15-30 seconds.
- Listen for whistling/hissing (a sign the air box lid isn’t sealed).
- Make sure no warning lights appear.
- Recheck clips if anything sounds “airy.”
