🔧 Wrangler - Engine Air Filter Replacement
Your Wrangler’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow, helps performance, and can improve fuel economy if the old filter is dirty.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the intake and engine bay.
- ⚠️ Keep dirt/leaves from falling into the air box or intake tube.
- ⚠️ Do not start the engine with the air box open or the filter removed.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flathead screwdriver
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Small shop vacuum

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was running.
- Have your new filter ready, and keep the air box area clean.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the air filter housing
- Find the black plastic air box on the passenger-side front of the engine bay.
- The air box is where the intake tube (the large black tube) connects.
Step 2: Release the air box cover
- Unclip the metal retaining clips on the air box by hand. If they’re tight, gently pry with a flathead screwdriver.
- If your intake tube clamp must be loosened for extra wiggle room, use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and loosen it slightly (do not remove it unless needed).
- Don’t force the plastic—wiggle it.
Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter
- Lift the air box lid up enough to access the filter.
- Pull the old filter straight out.
- Use a microfiber towel to cover the lower air box opening if you need a moment, so nothing falls in.
Step 4: Clean the air box (quickly)
- Use a small shop vacuum to remove loose dirt/leaves from the lower half of the air box.
- Wipe the sealing surface (where the filter’s rubber edge sits) with a clean microfiber towel.
- Keep debris out of the intake tube.
Step 5: Install the new air filter
- Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
- Make sure the filter is fully seated and the gasket edge sits flat all the way around (no pinched corners).
Step 6: Close and secure the air box
- Lower the air box lid back into place.
- Re-engage all the metal clips by hand.
- If you loosened the intake tube clamp, tighten it using an 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet until snug (do not overtighten).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 10-20 seconds.
- Listen for air leaks (a loud hissing) around the air box and intake tube.
- If you hear a leak or see the lid sitting crooked, shut the engine off and re-seat the filter and clips.
