🔧 Wrangler - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Wrangler’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it restores airflow and helps performance and fuel economy, especially if you drive off-road or on dusty roads.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine OFF and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the open airbox and intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Do not spray cleaner into sensors or the intake.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Shop vacuum
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was running.
  • Have a shop vacuum ready so you can remove loose dust from the airbox.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight and look for the black plastic airbox on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • The air filter sits inside this airbox under a lid held by metal clips.

Step 2: Unclip and open the airbox

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips by hand and lift the airbox lid up.
  • Don’t yank—clips can spring back.

Step 3: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the filter straight out of the lower airbox.
  • Use a flashlight to check the lower airbox for leaves or heavy dirt.

Step 4: Clean the airbox sealing surface

  • Use a shop vacuum to remove loose debris from the lower airbox.
  • Wipe the sealing edge with a clean microfiber towel.
  • Do not vacuum/scrape inside the intake tube.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new engine air filter into the lower airbox the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully seated all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close and latch the airbox

  • Lower the airbox lid back into place.
  • Re-attach all the retaining clips by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the lid is evenly closed on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15-30 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the airbox lid isn’t sealed.
  • Re-check the clips and that the airbox lid is fully seated if anything sounds off.
