🔧 Wrangler - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Wrangler’s engine air filter keeps dust and dirt out of the engine. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps throttle response, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and debris out of the air box and intake tube.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flat-blade screwdriver (medium)
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for 15+ minutes if it was running.
  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box on the passenger-side of the engine bay (black plastic box with metal clips).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a flashlight to find the metal spring clips around the air box lid.
  • Release each clip. If one is stubborn, use a flat-blade screwdriver (medium) to gently pry the clip open. Don’t crack the plastic tabs.

Step 2: Remove the old air filter

  • Lift the air box lid enough to access the filter (you usually don’t need to remove the intake tube).
  • Pull the filter straight up and out using your gloved hands.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dirt from the air box sealing surface (the flat edge where the filter sits).

Step 3: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Use the flashlight to confirm the filter is fully seated and flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 4: Close and latch the air box

  • Lower the air box lid into place.
  • Re-latch all the clips by hand; if needed, use the flat-blade screwdriver (medium) to help guide a clip into place (do not force it).
  • Use the flashlight to verify the lid is evenly closed on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 15–30 seconds.
  • Listen for whistling or hissing (can indicate the air box lid isn’t sealed).
  • Take a short drive and re-check that the clips are still fully latched.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)
