🔧 Legacy - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Legacy’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps maintain smooth power, good fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work with the engine off and cool to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the radiator fans; they can turn on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the engine with the air filter removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key (or keep the fob away from the car).
  • Open the hood and support it securely with the prop rod.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Use a flashlight and find the black plastic air box in the engine bay (this is the air filter housing).
  • It’s the box connected to the big intake tube.

Step 2: Unclip the air box

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Release the metal retaining clips around the air box by hand. (These “clips” are spring latches that hold the lid down.)
  • Use a flashlight to confirm all clips are fully unlatched.

Step 3: Open the housing and remove the old filter

  • Lift the top half of the air box lid up enough to access the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out by hand.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust out of the air box (do not let debris fall deeper into the intake).

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Insert the new engine air filter into the housing the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat and fully seals all the way around (no corners folded).
  • A crooked filter can let dirt past.

Step 5: Close and re-clip the air box

  • Lower the air box lid back into place, keeping the filter from shifting.
  • Snap all the metal clips back on by hand until they lock firmly.
  • Use a flashlight to verify the lid is evenly seated on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10–20 seconds.
  • Listen for any hissing/whistling that could indicate the air box isn’t fully clipped.
  • Recheck that every clip is latched and the housing seam looks even.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
