🔧 Outback - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Outback’s engine air filter sits in the air box (the black plastic box) in the engine bay. Replacing it restores proper airflow, helps fuel economy, and protects the engine from dirt.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and fingers clear of the radiator fans (they can turn on unexpectedly if the key is on).
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shut the engine off, and remove the key.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10-15 minutes if it was running.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the air box clips clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air box

  • Use a flashlight to find the large black plastic air box in the engine bay with an intake snorkel (plastic duct) attached.

Step 2: Unclip the air box lid

  • Use your hands (gloves help) to release the metal retaining clips around the air box lid.
  • If a clip is stubborn, wiggle it gently—don’t pry hard on the plastic.

Step 3: Open the air box and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid up just enough to slide the filter out.
  • Pull the old filter straight out and note its orientation (which side faces up).

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust from the lower air box.
  • Don’t drop debris into the intake tube.

Step 5: Install the new engine air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same direction as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat and fully in the groove all the way around (this prevents unfiltered air leaks).

Step 6: Close the air box and re-latch the clips

  • Lower the lid evenly so it meets the bottom half without pinching the filter.
  • Snap all retaining clips back into place by hand.
  • Do a quick visual check with the flashlight that the lid is seated evenly on all sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 10-20 seconds.
  • Listen for any loud hissing/whistling near the air box (a sign the lid isn’t sealed).
  • Recheck the clips and the air box seam if anything sounds off.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
