🔧 Tacoma - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Tacoma’s engine air filter sits in the air box and keeps dust/debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps airflow, fuel economy, and protects the engine from dirt.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools and loose items out of the air intake tube.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to neutral, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for 15–30 minutes if it was running.
  • 🔦 Open the hood and locate the black plastic air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter box

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to find the air box lid seams and the retaining clips.
  • Unclip the metal retaining clips by hand. If your air box has screws instead of clips, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 2: Lift the lid and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box lid straight up enough to clear the filter.
  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Tip: Note which side faces up.

Step 3: Clean the air box (quick check)

  • Use a flashlight to look inside the lower air box.
  • Wipe out loose dust with a slightly damp rag (do not let debris fall into the intake opening).

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the filter sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 5: Close and secure the air box

  • Lower the lid back into place, lining up the edges.
  • Snap the clips back on by hand, or tighten screws with a Phillips screwdriver until snug (do not over-tighten).

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Double-check all clips/screws are secured and the lid seam is evenly closed.
  • 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle for 20–30 seconds; it should run smoothly.
  • 🧾 If the old filter was very dirty, plan to recheck the new one sooner if you drive in dusty areas.
