📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tacoma on level ground.
- Set the parking brake and turn the ignition fully off.
- Open the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
- The engine air filter box is on the passenger side of the engine bay, connected to the black air intake tube.
- A shop towel is a clean cloth used to wipe dust from surfaces without leaving debris behind.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your hand to release the safety latch at the front of the hood.
- Lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Use a flashlight to locate the engine air filter housing on the passenger side.
Step 2: Release the Air Filter Housing Clips
- Use your hand to unlatch the metal retaining clips on the air filter housing cover.
- The retaining clips are spring clips that hold the top half of the air box closed.
- Pull each clip outward and away from the housing until it releases.
- Clips may snap loudly.
Step 3: Lift the Air Filter Housing Cover
- Use both hands to gently lift the top cover of the air filter housing.
- Do not force the intake tube or bend it sharply.
- You only need enough space to slide the old filter out.
- No bolts need to be removed for normal engine air filter replacement.
Step 4: Remove the Old Engine Air Filter
- Use your hand to lift the old engine air filter straight out of the lower air box.
- Look at how the filter sits before removing it so the new one goes in the same way.
- Use a flashlight to inspect the bottom of the air box for leaves, sand, or debris.
Step 5: Clean the Air Box
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe loose dust from the lower air box.
- Do not push dirt into the intake opening.
- Do not use compressed air directly into the intake tube.
- Keep dirt out of the engine.
Step 6: Install the New Engine Air Filter
- Use your hands to place the new engine air filter into the lower air box.
- Make sure the rubber sealing edge sits flat all the way around.
- The filter should drop into place without being crushed or folded.
- If it does not sit flat, remove it and reinstall it carefully.
Step 7: Close the Air Filter Housing
- Use both hands to lower the air filter housing cover back into place.
- Check that the cover is fully seated and not pinching the filter.
- Use your hand to snap the metal retaining clips back onto the housing.
- No torque spec applies because the housing uses clips, not bolts.
Step 8: Final Check
- Use a flashlight to confirm the air box cover is closed evenly on all sides.
- Use your hand to gently wiggle the housing cover; it should feel secure.
- Remove all tools and towels from the engine bay before closing the hood.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Tacoma and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
- Listen for unusual hissing sounds near the air filter housing.
- If you hear a hiss, shut the engine off and recheck that the cover and filter seal are seated correctly.
- No scan tool reset or infotainment reset is required for this repair.
