🔧 Tacoma - Engine Air Filter Replacement

The engine air filter keeps dirt and debris out of the intake system. On your Tacoma, this is a simple service: open the air box, swap the filter, and make sure the housing seals back up correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and let it cool before starting.
  • Keep tools, screws, and debris out of the air intake box.
  • Make sure the air filter lid is fully seated before driving.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and locate the air filter box on top of the engine bay.
  • Tip: Take a quick photo before removing the cover.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the air filter housing

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen any housing screws if equipped.
  • If your air box uses retaining clips, release them by hand or with a flathead screwdriver if needed.
  • Lift the air filter cover carefully.

Step 2: Remove the old filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out of the air box.
  • Check for leaves, dirt, or loose debris inside the housing.
  • Tip: Do not let dirt fall into the intake tube.

Step 3: Clean the air box

  • Wipe out the inside of the air box with a clean rag or your gloved hand.
  • Make sure the sealing surface is clean and dry.

Step 4: Install the new filter

  • Place the new filter into the air box in the same position as the old one.
  • Make sure it sits flat all the way around.
  • The rubber edge must seal evenly against the housing.

Step 5: Reinstall the cover

  • Lower the air filter cover back into place.
  • Reinstall and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver if equipped.
  • Snap the retaining clips closed if your Tacoma uses clips.
  • Torque to snug only; do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual hissing or air leaks.
  • Check that the air box is fully closed and secure.
  • Make sure no tools or rags were left in the engine bay.
