šŸ”§ Tacoma - Engine Air Filter Replacement

Your Tacoma’s engine air filter keeps dust and debris out of the engine. Replacing it helps performance, fuel economy, and protects the engine from wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work with the engine OFF and cool so you don’t burn yourself.
  • āš ļø Do not drop dirt into the air box or intake tube.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the cooling fan area.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range) (specialty)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool for 10–15 minutes.
  • Quick check: look at your air box cover—does it use only metal clips, or does it also have 10mm bolts? If you tell me which one you have, I’ll tailor the steps exactly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing

  • Find the black plastic air filter box on the passenger-side of the engine bay.
  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before handling dusty parts.

Step 2: Unlatch or unbolt the air box cover

  • If your cover has metal clips: release them by hand or with a flathead screwdriver (use gentle pressure so you don’t snap the clip).
  • If your cover has 10mm bolts: loosen/remove them using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet. Keep bolts in a cup.

Step 3: Open the cover and remove the old filter

  • Lift the air box cover up enough to pull the filter out (you usually don’t need to remove the whole cover).
  • Remove the old filter and note how it sits in the box (rubber seal orientation).

Step 4: Clean the air box sealing surface

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe out loose dust from the lower air box.
  • Do not use a rag that sheds fibers, and do not push dirt into the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the new air filter

  • Place the new filter into the lower air box the same way the old one came out.
  • Make sure the rubber seal sits flat all the way around (no corners folded).

Step 6: Close and secure the air box

  • Close the cover and make sure it seats evenly.
  • Re-latch the clips by hand (or with a flathead screwdriver if needed).
  • If your cover uses bolts: tighten with a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then finish with a torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range) (specialty) to the OEM spec. (Tell me whether yours has bolts and I’ll give you the exact torque spec for your air box.)

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for any hissing/whistling (a sign the air box isn’t sealed).
  • Double-check all clips/bolts are secure and the cover is fully seated.
  • If you removed any intake hose clamp, confirm it’s tight using a flathead screwdriver.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$90 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$55 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
